ICT in Cleantech Series

Ottawa sits atop an enviable infrastructure for information and communications technology rivalled only by a tremendous amount of resident talent. Recent changes in the landscape of this sector locally has placed these resources in a unique position in Canada and perhaps North America to capitalise on emerging global opportunities in niche markets such as the intersection with the cleantech sector, a sector that is projected to grow to $1.3T by 2017. There is a growing recognition that there are many significant opportunities where these two sectors intersect. A growing focus on carbon intensity, energy pricing and sustainability more broadly are creating market conditions that favour clean technology innovation. Smarter buildings, energy management and distribution (such as Smart Grids), community energy are just a few examples of potential applications of the ICT sector’s capacity. This series will explore the applications of ICT in the cleantech sector, global trends, growth opportunities and the relationship to capabilities in the Ottawa region in order to leverage our resources towards new, profitable ventures.

Join us in this effort to prepare the region’s talent and infrastructure to take advantage of these growing opportunities.

2011-2012 Program Committee Mandate:

The mandate of OCRI’s ICT in Cleantech committee is the sharing of knowledge through a series of guest speaker events. The committee will develop the program by identifying key topics and speakers to explore the applications of ICT in the cleantech sector, global trends, growth opportunities and the relationship to capabilities in the Ottawa region in order to leverage existing resources towards new, profitable ventures.

2011-2012 Program Committee Members:

Bruce Dudley, The Delphi Group (CHAIR); Karen Blair, ITO 2.0; Bert Perebom, IBM; Bill St. Arnaud, BSA; Kathy Mahoney, OCRI; Marc McArthur, OCRI; Martin Mihowich, CRC; Perry Mangione, NRC-CNRC; and Andrew Potworowski, University of Ottawa.

Program Events:

Meeting and event logistics will be established by the Committee.

Meeting Topics/Speakers:

A committee of specialists in ICT, cleantech, the environment and human resources will select a range of topics that have appeal to both opportunity makers and seekers in the ICT sector and related communities. Speakers are professionals from both the private and public sectors who have established a reputation for depth of knowledge and perspective on the topic for which they present. Speakers are invited from the Ottawa area as well as from the rest of North America with assistance from some of our sponsors.

Who Should Attend:

All members of the business community with links to either ICT or Cleantech are encouraged to attend, not only executives of companies developing and selling products, but also of companies providing goods and services in this sector. Members of the press and communications sector are very welcome. (The purpose is, after all, to create self-awareness and strength through networking.) Representatives of pertinent government agencies and the academic community are also invited. Out-of-town executives are encouraged to time their visits to Ottawa to enable them to attend. Early stage companies in these sectors are particularly welcome.
