Portfolio Services Lead

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Portfolio Manager of Innovation, the Portfolio Services Lead ensures our startups are leveraging Invest Ottawa’s business acceleration services to maximize their potential. You will lead various activities including the intake of early-stage startups, manage the flow of companies accessing our services, support Innovation program initiatives, and moving program delivery forward.

Within your role as Portfolio Services Lead, you will meet and work alongside the entrepreneurs and advisers who are shaping Ottawa’s startup community. Our mission is to make Ottawa the best place in Canada to start and grow a knowledge-based business. Invest Ottawa services include start-up incubation and mentoring, acceleration for existing companies, global business attraction and local business retention, targeted sector development, commercialization, and marketing Ottawa’s diversified economy and high quality of life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages the intake of early-stage startups, and helps transition them to other teams within the organization as they grow;
  • Manages team of Advisors, and shares opportunities and programs that may be beneficial to their portfolio companies;
  • Liases between portfolio companies and Advisors; connects and suggests appropriate Advisors and other contacts within the community;
  • Manages boarding process for new Advisors, and has excellent expertise of the Advisory team;
  • Monitors needs of portfolio companies, identifies gaps in Advisory team’s skill-set and suggests solutions on how to bridge gaps;
  • Provides training and support to Advisors on SalesForce, and tracks key metrics.

Entrepreneurship Community Manager

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Managing Director of Innovation, the Entrepreneurship Community Manager will make sure we grow our network exponentially and that every client is getting tremendous value from facilitated collisions with other clients. The Entrepreneurship Community Manager will help realize the brand of Invest Ottawa (IO) as an innovative and inclusive entrepreneurial community builder. In addition to growing existing IO programs like Mentor Madness and Main & Digital, the manager will develop new programming such as meetups, peer to peer groups, and other events that support members of our community. The manager will also support increasing the talent pipeline, and assist in new mentorship, internship, and job opportunities. Finally, the Entrepreneurship Community Manager will assist in supporting communications to our clients using platforms like Slack.

The Entrepreneurship Community Manager will be responsible for ensuring active and engaged communities around defined topics, industries and company stages helping to drive conversations and participation thru the community and thought-leadership. Equipped with a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by entrepreneurs, this person will be responsible for creating entrepreneurial initiatives, fostering new business partnerships, and increasing the impact of IO’s Entrepreneurial network.

  • Acts as advocate and evangelist for the Innovation Team
  • Maintains strong networks in the community
  • Understands the needs and support entrepreneurs, companies, and students in Ottawa
  • Leads the production and execution of new entrepreneurial events and workshops
  • Develops new entrepreneurship and mentorship programs that grows the local entrepreneurial talent pool
  • Coordinate & nurture Invest Ottawa’s network of alumnus, mentors and entrepreneurs and ensure knowledge sharing and collaboration opportunities for collisions exist
  • Produce community management guidelines and documents

Human Resource Administrator

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Vice-President of Finance and Administration, the ideal candidate will have HR experience and enjoy working in a collaborative culture. The role will proactively support a variety of HR related duties and administrative tasks including coordination of human resources initiatives in addition to the administration of HR processes, including payroll.

This role will also support employees and managers by providing a variety of HR functions including recruitment and selection, occupational health and safety, benefits, and human resources administration. The Human Resources Administrator will be responsible for responding to questions regarding Invest Ottawa’s HR policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

Staffing & Orientation

  • Work with internal clients to develop job postings on both internal and external company websites as well as other websites as appropriate;
  • Resume screening, interviewing and liaising with external contacts;
  • Respond to inquiries from applicants, staff and internal clients about positions and the selection process;
  • Prepare offer letters of employment;
  • Collect, share and manage employee information;
  • Assist managers with the completion of reference Checks and advise them of results;
  • Manage the new hire orientation program;
  • Maintain and input all new employee information in HRIS and appropriate files

Compensation, Performance Management & Benefits

  • Process payroll bi-weekly (ADP);
  • Support compensation and benefit related initiatives, such as coordination of the annual performance management, annual salary and incentive review
  • Consult with provider on employee Health, Dental and Health Care Spending Claims to assist employees with their benefit needs;
  • Liaison with Finance

Employee Relations and Performance Management

  • Assist with the annual employee performance review process;
  • Assist in the ongoing maintenance of HR Policies and Procedures and ensuring policies meet all legislative requirements and accurately reflect practices and culture of IO;

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in HR, Employment Standards and other employment related legislation and how to apply them in the business;
  • High level of personal integrity and commitment to confidentiality;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, manage and coordinate activities;
  • Detail oriented with strong project management and time management skills.
